Another Brick in the wall

What can I say about the last few years, months or anything at all. Lately, the more I look at social media, the more confusing things get. The abundance of information everywhere, be it good or bad, is mind-blowing! Personally, 2017 is off to a better start than 2016, last year was a challenging year… interesting but challenging. Add to that raising two boys under 6 and you find yourself running out of steam pretty quickly.

I learned some very important things these past couple of years, like:

1- Never say never

2- Now I believe there is only a huge grey zone, no black or white

3- Never underestimate the power of wine in solving problems…
or making you forget them

4- I have no idea if I’m a good father

5- I used to think I was a patient person

6- You can survive on 5 hours of sleep or less a night for two years straight

7- My wife is an incredible person

8- Did I mention wine?

9- There are several ways you can prepare toast for your child… none of them will be OK

10- Sometimes it’s OK to cry for a missing piece of LEGO

11- NETFLIX

12- Re-discovering music with your kids is priceless

13- Know your limits, again, know your limits

14- I’m a very lucky human being… I tend to forget this quite often

15- It is extremely important that you keep some time only for yourself

16- I miss analog photography more than I ever thought I would

17- #16 is not an excuse, get off your butt and shoot!

18- You can love someone in a way you had never imagined and also be mad at them
in a way you never imagined

19- “Life changing experience” is probably the most accurate term when you have kids

20- If we’re going to make it in this world, we have to help each other and communicate.

That’s my 2 cents and here are some pictures from this Winter/Christmas/random moments

My street photos in Montréal

Ohh James…

I had the great opportunity and pleasure of working with my dear old friend James Correa. It was a perfect Spring evening, the light was fantabulous and I was waiting impatiently to try my carl zeiss t* planar 50mm f/1.4 with an FX mount for the X-pro1. Which would be like a 80mm or so on a full frame body. And thus, a love story was reborn!

Some very minor retouching and color correcting were done in photoshop and VCSO film. And I love the manual focus on this cam, I don’t know why so many people bitch about it :)

Analog love… in a digital world

There comes a point in your life where you have to just admit to yourself certain things, things that you keep avoiding. In my case, I want to love digital photography and to some extent I do but nothing like getting some decent scans back from the lab. There is still something in film and especially bw photography that I haven’t seen or felt when looking at digital files.

This next set is pretty random and some were taken last Summer, and others right before the new year. These were all taken with the Hexar AF and Kodak Tri-X 400.

This was mind blowing… seeing my dad with my son, for the first time, just a great moment!000000030018

These two are always together, especially when my son is eating something. The possibility that he will drop some food is pretty high, and also recurring. 000000030022

Second impressions

I’m just starting to understand all the features on the Fuji X-pro1. One of the many features which I find super is the double expose option. I had a bit of fun during the Holidays playing around with it and here are some of the shots. I think next Summer will be a great time to explore this option, especially to give it the “taking photos through a window” kind of effect. Like seeing what’s ahead and what’s behind at the same time.

These were taken with a Fuji X-Pro1 and the 18mm 2.0, double expose mode.
Converted with VSCO film simulation plugin in Aperture.

Fleeting moments

I haven’t been around here in like forever, I miss blogging and especially taking pictures (with a real camera). I picked up my Contax 645 last week for the first time in like almost a year, I heard the film winding and I felt excited. I never really stopped “taking pictures” just not in the same fashion that I used to. To put myself back in the game and share my favourite shots from last year, here’s a collection of the moments I thought were important enough to capture, this time with my iPhone.

They are not in any particular order, just random moments that I would love to remember.

New life, new camera!

I haven’t loged into wordpress for the longest time. I was somewhat surprised that I still remembered my password, it kind of reassured me also. My last entry dates from Sept 2011, crazy, where does the time go?! Well, for those of you who don’t know anything about my life, my wife and I had a baby boy last Oct and it’s been an amusement park at home ever since, with the occasional haunted house ride during the night, complete with the crying, the screaming and the lack of sleep. But I wouldn’t change it for the world though, for me, being a father is like actually finding a meaning to my life, it’s what I was born to do, completely. Don’t worry, this entry is not about fatherhood or why babies are so cute and yadah yadah… yadah. This entry is about my other baby, the Hexar AF I bought some months ago. First of all, it’s a pretty cool looking camera, not too many knobs, just what you need and fantastic optics!

I’m not going to post any pictures of the camera, it’s pretty irrelevant, if you are curious about it then click here.

I have to warn you though there are a few photos of kids in this one, so if you are not fond of babies and kids in general then at least look at what the Hexar AF can do :) I apologize in advance for the bw photos, I gave my lab one last try and they gave me back garbage, expensive garbage and the scans are even worse. Needless to say I will be trying a new place, I heard some really good things about this other lab + they’re not $$. I’ll rescan them at home, eventually.

Some of the shots are from beginning of March until April, hope you enjoy!

Montreal, Jarry Park

The few next shots were taken with the Ilford Pan F 50, one of my favorite films and on this camera I think it’ll be even lovelier.

A perfect day for sliding, no wind and a gorgeous March sun!

Nice day for skating also! I have to say, I was pretty impressed with this 35/2 lens!

Probably not the best spot for this kid to stand in!

Ok, I know it’s a boring shot but I really wanted to see how this camera/lens would react, impressive! The scans and developing, not so much :(

Pretty clouds

I warned you it was coming! I finished my roll at a friend’s house who lives up north, we spent a very nice Sunday with his family and I brought mine, of course.
I don’t think my son was having a great first few minutes. Four adults, one giraffe and no hope.

Then things got much better! :)

Seriously, nice lens! I’m still amazed that my lab would give me back scans like this one, horrible!

Lola!
Ok now switching to color and much better scans! Portra 160 by the way.

I don’t know what’s funnier, my wife’s expression or my son’s face :)

Yeah, that’s you!

My friend Seb and my boy. Two great guys! :)

Having fun with Camille. It was really great seeing them all and especially getting out of the house for a change :)

The next few shots are random from different days and nights.

Supper at a friend’s house

I love taking a picture of a kid with a film camera and then having to explain why they can’t see it right away. I always get the most perplexed look from them, always!

It’s all about having choices in life :) Like having the opportunity of using such a fine camera and seeing what it does wide open.

A familiar sight I won’t be missing anytime soon!

My dog is weird!

Perfect day for a run!

This cat was not at all impressed with my dog!

My sister’s birthday! My niece and my son :)

If you think this shot is out of focus, think again.

Bonne fête chère soeur!

And yet another birthday party, kids this time, of course! All these bw shots were taken with Fuji Acros 100, nice film!

Awwwwww!

What every one year old kid needs, a signing potty trainer! :)

Cute little family

I love Sunday afternoons like this one!

It’s incredible how unimportant adults become once kids enter the picture. Now whenever we go see friends or family, it takes a while before anybody even says hello, it’s all about the baby. I’m not complaining, it is just so different!

It was a very warm day, unusually warm for March, somewhere in the mid 20’s (celsius).

The mamas…

… and the papas.

A perfect day!

My son discovering what everything tastes like.

Back home!

Then a cold front moved in. And what do you get when warm humid air suddenly meets cold air? Yes, gorgeous fog!
Had to shoot all these in MF, the fog was actually driving the AF bananas, B.A.N.A.N.A.S. :)

Fuji pro H 400, by the way

Lovely tones!

Last but not least, I really like how this film behaves in the Hexar! And on such lovely subjects, even more :)

I honestly don’t think that I’ll be shooting film as much as I used to, I just don’t have the time… and the $$ I have to spend is not inspiring but I still love the medium.
I came across a great website VSCO film  , I’ve never been really “in love” with digital photography but I downloaded this software for Aperture 3 and the results are quite amazing! Sure you need to teak here and there but it does what it says it does. Heck, if it’s good enough for Sean Flanigan, it’s good enough for me :)

In a future entry I was thinking of showing you some before and after pictures, I especially like the Portra filters and the grain, they are quite accurate.

Thanks for watching!

Summer 2011 photo blitz part 1

These days I feel like I’m caught between a dream, what ever is in the middle and real life. I wouldn’t say its hard, its just very different from what I’m used to feeling. In about 6 weeks my wife is supposed give birth, our first baby, the reason why my life has already changed so drastically, but in a good way of course :) I miss writing blogs, its not that I have no time, I could find the time, its not that hard but its just that I choose to spend more time elsewhere, make sure things are alright and that we’re on track with everything.

I admire parents, my parents, also my friends who already have kids and all of those couples that have 2 kids or more. Just thinking about kids can be exhausting :) But before I embark on this incredible adventure with Amélie, I will try to catch up with my entries and share some of my favourite shots from this Summer,  this is part 1 of 2 by the way.

Where to begin…

Sometime during the month of June, I had the great pleasure of having Arthur Mola and Philip Schulte over for the weekend. It was during the Grand Prix weekend of all possible weekends :) Always a pleasure spending time and shooting with people who love photography as much as them. What I remember the most from that weekend was, Tri-x, Jack and coke, using Philip’s M6, an exploding battery, getting our picture taken by the photo guy and watching Philip eat his first “real” poutine. The rest is all about having a good time!

Sherbrooke Metro on a Friday evening, the night we went out.

Expected

As I was saying

I really want a M6 with the Nokton 1.1, c’est si joli! :)

We all have our moments

Mr Mola on the hunt

I’ve had many meals in this place…. but none that I can clearly remember.

I always enjoy finding available light sources especially during the night but that’s not why I find this picture interesting.

I had no light meter by the way, the battery was dead on the M6 so all the night shots were a guess.

A must

After a good night sleep, or what was left of it, I made the guys some crepes and we ate outside. Last day in town for them, I thought it would only be appropriate to show them the Old port and Chinatown. Oddly enough I didn’t take many pictures, I guess I was more interested in seeing what they had experienced. Nevertheless here are some of the ones I managed to take.

….

My Contax 645 had to come out for this special occasion.

Arthur took this one

And this one, that is my “Ididn’tgetenoughsleep” face

This was at 1.1 with the Nokton 50, damn that’s shallow :) I should of had more practice with it but still enjoyed the outcome.

I was pretty off on this shot, but the essential is there

Street performer getting his share of attention

Chinatown, obviously

Some nice action again! We headed back to my place and the guys packed up and got ready for the drive back to Toronto, which I believe is about 6-7 hours away. It was short and sweet, happy they came down and hopefully it wont’t be our last gathering!

Later that month I went For a boys weekend to Quebec city, a quick 2 day adventure that was long overdue :)

Arrived

Was great to have some quality time with the guys.

This shot just makes me smile, that early morning attitude… before coffee of course.

A little windy that morning

But not without a sense of humour. That had to be the earliest bachelor party ever… Would you like some Jack Daniels with your eggs? We later saw him again twice, the second time he didn’t look as energetic ;)

Tourists… they are so visible…

… like vintage cars, which I prefer to tourists ;)

One of those moments

Met up with the guys later on and had “some” Sangria

Tourists :)

David Bowie

Love walking in this weather.

Getting ready for supper. Was a great weekend indeed!

Now onto something completely different. My wife and I decided to rent a cottage in the eastern townships and invite here parents for a long weekend. They had helped us so much with our wedding that it seemed like the least we could do. It was a perfectly relaxing weekend and for once I felt like they were getting taken care
of  and not the other way around :)

Good times!

So glad they enjoyed it!

I love these moments

Time has no value here.

You can concentrate on the important things in life.

ADD Attention definitely desired

Runs in the family I guess

A nice view I’m sure :)

The friendly stalker.

Later on in July we were at our friend’s boy’s 2nd B-day party, a gorgeous day, a nice pool and great company.

Time for presents!

A moving violation!

Conversations – Hey, there’s my little boy!… somewhere there. :)

Related? ;)

How about these two?

Some soothing

Some attitude! I’m sure he was like: “Buddy, put the camera down and lets go swim!”

A perfect Summer day!

:)

You can rest now, all has been done!

The next ones are really random from the days that followed.

That’s a dog lover! :)

Good times

Good food

Ahhhh

Those eyes!

Something tasted funny, I guess.

Kids, they’re everywhere I tell you!

Too adorable to pass

Ok enough with the kids, for now.

Back to kids :)

A father daughter moment, interrupted by the incredibly loud Contax 645 :)

During my official B-day celebration brunch ;)

And my mama!

Well, that’s it for now. I have lots more to show you in part two. A little more documentary style but still very summer-ish for the most part ;)

Hope you enjoyed watching.

A bientôt!
